Luther L. Lyon collection, 1880-1986.

Summary: Collection consists of materials collected and created by Lyon in the course of his research on the photography of Indian ceremonies in the Southwest. Includes clippings, letters, research notes, and several typed drafts of Lyon's unpublished manuscript "The History of the Prohibition of Photography of Southwest Indian Ceremonies." Many of the letters and notes document his conversations with various scholars about the history of photography of Indian ceremonies in the Southwest. Collection also includes many photocopies of photographs of Indian ceremonies with descriptive captions; individual folders with materials on the photography policies of specific tribes and Pueblos; and a folder of materials on the photography of Emry Kopta at Hopi ceremonies in the early 20th century.

Emry Kopta (May 22, 1884 - May 20, 1953) was born in Austria to Vaclav and Flora Kopta. Vaclav was a distinguished concert violinist and music teacher in Czechoslovakia and the U.S.; during a tour with the New York and Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestras he met Flora Wilson, who was from a Philadelphia aristocratic family. Luther L. ("Luke") Lyon Jr. (1919-1988) of Los Alamos, NM, spent most of his career as a nuclear chemist. Upon his retirement, he turned to film and photographic history, concerned particularly with the rituals and customs of Native Americans.
